Full Game Explanation
Mafia (also commonly played as Werewolf) is a social deduction party game. A few players are secretly Mafia; everyone else is Town. The Mafia knows each other and try to wipe the Town out at night. The Town tries to find and vote them out during the day.
You’ll want 7–15 players plus a moderator who does not play. The moderator assigns roles, runs night and day, and announces deaths. Roles are dealt secretly (cards or folded slips). A typical 8–10 player setup is:
- 2–3 Mafia — know each other; each night they silently pick one person to kill
- Doctor— each night secretly protects one player (can be themselves)
- Sherriff — each night points at one player; the moderator silently signals whether that person is Mafia
- Townspeople — no night power; they win by voting correctly during the day
Night: Everyone closes their eyes. The moderator wakes the Mafia, who silently agree on a victim and go back to sleep. Then the Doctor protects someone, then the Detective investigates someone. Everyone else stays still and silent so they don’t give roles away.
Day: Everyone opens their eyes. The moderator announces who died (or that no one died if the Doctor saved them). The dead player reveals their role and is out — no talking or voting. The living players debate, accuse, bluff, and defend. Then they vote. The person with the most votes is eliminated and reveals their role.
The cycle repeats.
Town wins when every Mafia member is dead. **Mafia wins** when they equal or outnumber the remaining Town players (they can no longer lose a vote). Dead Town players still win if Town wins.
House rules vary a lot — extra roles, no Doctor, first-night immunity, tie votes, etc. — but the core loop is always secret night kills, public day debate, and a vote.
